Counting Roadkill. We set off with anticipation on a road trip all across the nation I've never seen so many petrol stations I saw more of them than Appalachians You were driving along with your hands on your lap The roads were so long you could have taken a nap And woken up in a town that looked like the last With an adult superstore and a place to get gas A billboard ahead read 'Jesus saves' And another one said 'save more at Walmart' We were playing a game, you had to count roadkill You got an extra point if you saw a bald eagle But several hours went by and nothing had come And we were still sitting there listening to Neil Young And all I could think about was while I'm gone How many emails will she send? But I checked, there were none Just an offer on a brand of razor blades and some spam that said 'hey baby, do you wanna get laid? There's a light on the horizon coming our way It's a broken down lorry on the motorway And the bright neon shape of a fast food chain I just want to escape the mundane We went from state to state for stories to tell And ate microwave meals in smokey motels Trying to get inspiration from CNN watching white politicians talking to white men That's when we took the car off the beaten track, got lost in a forest and couldn't find our way back We found a lake by mistake and we jumped right in We had fish by our feet and goosebumps on our skin There's a light on the horizon coming our way It's a broken down lorry on the motorway And the bright neon shape of a fast food chain I just want to escape the mundane

Free Range 03:18
Free Range Any delusions of grandeur blew out the window When a coat hanger and cling film fashioned pop shield Became my tool to get a record deal And when the banker's raised eyebrows said to me 'You should have left your overdraft when you were twenty three And got a real job like me with a company car Instead of writing poetry and trying to play guitar' But he's got a different definition of success The percentages are what he calls interest And does he ride through the night with a friend on his back On a bike going wild on a cycle track? And yes I feel like there's egg on my face But maybe one day I'll grow to like the taste At least it's free range and I'm not caged Behind a pane of glass counting cash all day Sitting in the kitchen on your own Listening to your breathing in a microphone Isn't the most glamourous of times But if I could change I think I'd change my mind

Selfie 02:48
Selfie You can't high five with a mountainside Or have an embrace, you've got to put on a brave face There's something missing It's just myself that I have been kissing And I hope you won't know that I'm really all alone But when I'm older and I'm looking over my shoulder Will I want to feel like I've been outside the care home? It's hard to star jump and press the button with your thumb Or get an action shot and try to act like you forgot There's something missing It's just myself that I have been kissing And I hope you won't know that I'm really all alone But when I'm older and I'm looking over my shoulder Will I want to feel like I've been outside the care home?

about

Featuring songs about endless car journeys, lifestyle choices and lonesome selfies taken in romantic surroundings. Opening song ‘Counting Roadkill’ recounts hours spent counting hapless animals and listening to Neil Young during an American roadtrip, all set to a motorik beat and upbeat tone. Title track ‘Free Range’ acts as a response to the unimpressed expression of a bank advisor, whilst ‘Selfie’ sees Graceland-era Paul Simon accordions put to a swing beat.
