Is he here yet? Men have replaced the older, media representations of 'macho' (film stars John Wayne, Robert Mitchum etc., and any others who, if worth their salt, were definitely bow-legged), with footballers and pop stars. No longer do we want the firm Wild West lawman; cool, collected and a brutish brick wall in a crisis. We want sportsmen who cry when their team loses, and who will openly cheat and lie for them to win (Beckham '96? …football culture…), and air-brushed, hair less, muscular torsos; serenading, poutingly, while rolling around on the beach, bronzed and unbuttoned.

Did he ever really exist? It's still the basic premise for the election of US presidents (Ronald Reagan, even Schwarzenegger and Eastwood). We're told it's right-wing, but isn't it just as much about our notions of strength and honour? And is that exclusively male? Does Hilary really stand a chance? Thatcher was the one who first ignited the whole gender 'smoke-screen', and never for the benefit of her sex. The ultimate Macho Bimbo. An original Bow-Legged-Man.
