'Houdini' is part circus song, part tour diary collage and part traditional American nursery rhyme. When Brother Sam sent Mike Watt his parts and asked for a rap, Watt drew on his Houdini connection for the lyrics. He was on a U.S. tour in the late 80s and after the Detroit gig, some kind cats invited him to stay at a music school, which in a former life had been a funeral parlour. Watt laid his sleeping bag out in a shallow tiled tub, not realising what it or the other stuff in the room was really about, until the next day, when his hosts enlightened him to the fact that Houdini had his last work done on him there.
